Running with the bulls in Pamplona

Filed under: Articles — AnaM @ 12:06 pm

There must be something with Spain and bulls … It is a way to entertain the crowds and to prove a superiority against 700 kilos of pure muscle. Although many prefer the bull fighting; watching the drama show directed skilfully by the matador, many head to Pamplona in july for the festival of San Fermin and the annual Bull Run.

The actual run takes place early in the evening from the 7th to the 14th of July and is the manes by which the bulls are brought to the arena for the start of the bull fight. The runners lead the bulls across 825 meters in a race that lasts about 3 minutes on a preset track, with the crowds cheering and encouraging them all along the way, from the balconies or the windows above the street level.

Many precautions have been imposed on the people watching the run, as the serious hazard have resulted in the death of more than 15 people and the serious injury of 200 others along the years. Tourists are not allowed to impede the running, either by disturbing the bulls or the runners, restrictions regarding where you can watch the race from are enforced by the local police. Although medical care is available, there are few things that can be done while the bulls are at it.

A great thing to do while in Spain. But remember to book in advance, for both hotel and arena seats. Also, getting up early to see the run is a good ideea, as the good spots are taken by 7 am.
